MudWing Jiangs is a great concept but I have to admit I personally like the SkyWing option best I think, not only because it is easy to visualize SkyWing Madame Yu but also since they're so against unusual mutations and historically don't allow their animus dragons to live it maps well to the drama of Wei Wuxian being raised as part of the family. You get some good sibling drama with the "society says my brother shouldn't be alive, but he's my brother and I care about him so I can't let anyone find out," which is a good sibling drama flavor.

Cultivation also maps really well to battle prowess, which the SkyWings in particular seem to value, which would be an added bonus.

also i'd been thinking about him getting one of his wings damaged as analogous to the whole golden core business and with skywings that would be an even bigger deal...

Oooo! Yeah that does work well for that.

Also just the mounting frustration from the Jiangs of having spent so much effort keeping his animus powers a secret only for him to all of a sudden give that up and make a big scene. That good Society vs. Family drama. Plus if I recall correctly SkyWings are one of the tribes that do arranged marriages/matings so that works for Yanli too.

Also side note but does he still play the flute in this AU, please say yes.

I'm pretty sure there are some but I don't know the specifics about instruments, they usually only show up at parties, which are few and far between. I KNOW there were some in Darkstalker but I can't recall from the other books.

I feel like they might have come up in Possibility in the second series? But my memory is hazy! I gotta reread some stuff it's important to know whether wwx gets to toot

I just pulled out Winter Turning, there is mention of a someone playing a stringed instrument in Possibility.

The closest I've found to flutes is "a conch shell fanfare" in Darkstalker at the SeaWing party. The musicians at the party were playing "the queen's favorite instruments" but did not specify further than that.

I feel like a flute isn't too much of a stretch if they use conch shell horns.

excellent in that case he definitely used to have an enchanted flute
